Born in Leslie County in 1889 to a mother with children from 3 different men. She probably never lived with either of her parents, spending most of her childhood at her maternal grandparents home, just down the road from her mother. Of Mattie's 4 step-siblings, only one would live past 1933. She lost two siblings within a week. May 3rd and May 8th, 1932. She lost her sister Nancy Slusher Wilson to a heart condition, and lost her brother Rufus Saylor just days later, when he was taken out in the woods by 3 men and murdered. The next year, her brother Cylus would have his leg fractured by a slate fall in a coal mine, and die that day. Her youngest sibling, a brother named Ester would outlive her. Mattie married her first husband, William Brock in 1906. She would go on to have 5 children with "Willie". They probably divorced around late 1920 or early 1921. Willie would die not long later in 1921, when a slate fall in Lynch Mine of Harlan County crushed his head, killing him instantly. She would marry her next husband, R.E. Munsey in Benham, Kentucky, in December of that year. It is not known what happened to him, but they probably divorced. She married her final husband in 1926, in Claiborne County, Tennessee. William "Billie" Blanton was 19 years her junior. It is not known what happened to him either, but she was a widow, living with her daughter Opal on Dorton Branch in 1940. In 1949, she lost her only son, Earl to tuberculosis. He was buried at the state hospital in Danville, Kentucky, where he passed away. Not much is known about Mattie's later life. She died at Deaconess Hospital in Cincinnati in 1972. She was buried in an unmarked grave at Oak Hill Cemetery of the same city.
