James served as a Private, Company F, 4th Delaware Infantry during the Civil War.

He enlisted in the 4th Delaware on August 14, 1862.

He was shot in the left leg by a sharpshooter during the Battle of Petersburg on June 15, 1864 and eventually lost that leg. He had to use crutches for the rest of his life.

He was discharged from service on May 31, 1865 from the Military Hospital, Chester, Pa.

Husband of Elizabeth Van Winkle Carrow.

Dad of Mary, Benjamin, Wilmer and Louis Carrow.
