Warren "Pete" Peters, 87, of Effingham, Illinois passed away quietly at his home at 12:59 p.m. Friday, May 17, 2013.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Centenary United Methodist Church, Effingham, Illinois with Dr. Joe Scheets and the Rev. C.W. Lewis officiating. A private family burial will be in Big Prairie Cemetery at a later date in rural Carmi, Illinois. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and also from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. Services are under the care of Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham, Illinois.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the following: Centenary United Methodist Church, 203. E. Grove Ave., Effingham, Illinois 62401; Foundation Fighting Blindness, P.O. Box 17279, Baltimore, Maryland 21298-9581; The Baby Fold, 108 E. Willow St., Normal, Illinois 61761; National Wild Turkey Federation; and Effingham Animal Rescue Sanctuary, P.O. Warren was born on Feb. 9, 1926, in Bible Grove, Illinois the son of Ernest and Eunice (Hardin) Peters. He married Peggy Doneghue on Aug. 12, 1967.

Pete was a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Marine Corps on Iwo Jima and with occupation forces in Japan. He was a retired teacher and administrator, first in a one-room rural school near Flora, then in Patoka, Arthur and Northbrook. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, NWTF and the Marine Corps Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

Pete is survived by his wife, Peggy Peters of Effingham, Illinois; daughters, Karen Shea of Wheeling, Illinois; and Janice (Carrol) Cox of Bloomington, Illinois; grandson, Mark Cox of New York City, New York; granddaughter, Heidi (Frank) Andrews of Findlay, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Reed and Katie Andrews; and stepgranddaughters, Cathy Cox of Warrenville and Laurie Cox of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Also, Mandi, a golden Labrador retriever, survives her beloved master. Other survivors include cousins from Clay County, Effingham and Ohio; niece, Judie Apablaza of Glendale, California; and Mary J. Peters of Arthur, Illinois, the mother of his daughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother and sister-in-law, Bernell and Esther Peters.
