Walter was the youngest of 5 children born to William Clark Race and his wife Rhoda L. Gray

Walter's service was Army Air Corps, 8th AF, 93rd Bomb Group 409th bomb Squadron based at RAF Hardwick, Bungay (5mi west), Norfolk, England.

He died when his plane the B-24 "Liberty Lass" (SN# 41-23732) on which he was the port waist gunner, was shot down off the coast of France & crashed in the Bay of Biscay.

The group La Fédération Bretonne du Souvenir Aérien 39/45 is dedicated to documenting all the WW II air losses for Région Bretagne aka the Britanny Region of France. They document the loss of the Liberty Lass as having occured off the coast of Plouarzel, Departement de la Finistère, Bretagne, France.
