Peter had enlisted in the US Army Reserves 8 February 1966 and then went into
active duty. Arriving in Vietnam 9 December 1967, Peter was assigned to C Troop, 3rd Squadron, 5th Calvary, 9th Calvary Division, USARV.
During Operation Jeb Stuart on 30 March 1968, the battalion was operating in the vicinity of Binh An, 8 kilometers south east of the Cua Viet River Mouth, when the armored personnel carrier that Lt Gallo was aboard was hit by a hostile rocket causing the tank to explode and burn.
The body of Lt Gallo and other crew members were recovered and identified 3 June 1968.
Survived by his father, Joseph E Gallo of 14040 Vinewood Avenue, Livingston, CA and his mother; Mary A Klor of 2509 Sherwood St, Modesto, CA.
Peter was the nephew of Ernest and Julio Gallo, the winemakers from California.
