Prior to their marriage Isaac had served as a Corporal in Company F, 6th Delaware Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. He enlisted on November 15, 1862 in Smyrna, Delaware for a 9 month term. He was noted as having a light complexion, dark eyes, and black hair. He was mustered out on August 22, 1863 as was the entire 6th Delaware Infantry. His brother's John and Benjamin also served with the 6th Delaware.
They first show up as a family in the 1870 Federal Census ( recorded: June 15, 1870 ) residing on a farm in Duck Creek Hundreds, southeast of Smyrna, Delaware ( more than likely on Dutch Neck Road ) that is located next to his Isaac's brother James' farm.
In the 1870 census Isaac is noted as a 27 year old " Farmer " and " Sarah " is noted as a 21 year old " Housekeeper ". They didn't have any children at this time.
Also residing on the farm with them in 1870 were " John Foreacres " ( Age 21 ~ farm laborer ), " John Solloway " ( Age 17 ~ farm laborer ), " Gove Pierce " ( Age 18 ~ farm laborer ), " Benjamin Morris " ( Age 11 ~ farm laborer ), " James Jarman " ( Age 11 ~ farm laborer ), " Daniel Morris " ( Age 9 ), " Annie Farrow " ( Age 15 ~ domestic servant ) and " Annie Meyer " ( Age 10 ~ domestic servant ).
In the 1870's the family suffered a " tragedy " ... their son Frank M. Truax who was born on May 19, 1876 passed away at the age of 8 months and 10 days on January 29, 1877. He was interred in the Glenwood Cemetery, Smyrna, Delaware.
In the 1880 Federal Census ( recorded: June 11, 1880 ) they were still residing on the same farm in Duck Creek Hundreds, southeast of Smyrna, Delaware. Isaac is noted as a 39 year old " Farmer " and " Sarah " is noted as a 30 year old " Housekeeper " raising " 3 " of their children: James ( Age 8 ) ~ Robert ( Age 5 ) ~ Lee ( Age 6 months ).
" Tragedy " again struck the family ..... their son Lee Truax who was born on December 5, 1879 passed away at the age of 7 months and 10 days on July 15, 1880 and he was interred in the Glenwood Cemetery, Smyrna, Delaware.
Sarah ( Hoffecker ) Truax preceded her husband in passing away at the age of 39 years, 10 months, and 5 days on January 18, 1889 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the " Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane " and was interred in the Glenwood Cemetery, Smyrna, Delaware. Isaac and Sarah had " 6 " children together.
Isaac, after Sarah's passing, then married " Amanda K. Knotts " on May 9, 1891 in Delaware. She was born on July 23, 1868 the daughter of George W. Knotts and Deborah Berry Knotts.
