John served as a Private in Company A, 6th Delaware Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. He enlisted on October 25, 1862 in Smyrna, Delaware for a 9 month term. He was mustered out on August 22, 1863 as was the entire 6th Delaware Infantry. His brother's Isaac and Benjamin also served with the 6th Delaware Infantry during the war.
John preceded his wife in passing away at the age of 27 years and 10 months on April 16, 1868 and was interred in the Glenwood Cemetery, Smyrna, Delaware. John and " Sarah " had " 1 " known child together.
His wife Sarah ( Hargadine ) Truax re-married after John's passing to " Joseph V. Hoffecker " in 1877 and Sarah and Joseph did not have any children together. Joseph, however, had 5 children prior to their marriage. Sarah ( Hargadine ) Hoffecker passed away on August 14, 1922 and was interred in the Glenwood Cemetery, Smyrna, Delaware with her second husband Joseph Hoffecker.
