Alfred Starr was killed while working for the school district in Indio, California. An electrical box had been damaged by a truck bringing a new classroom onto a school property. It was to be repaired before school opened on that Monday. Mr. Starr turned off two sources of electricity. When he returned to complete the repairs, Mr. Starr accidently touched a wire that remained live. Mr. Starr succumbed to this injury. Mr. Starr was found by a child that attended the school and reported to his mother that "Mr. Starr was sleeping at the school". The mother immediately called 911, however when emergency services arrived, Mr. Starr was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mrs. Starr was notified with two of her daughters, Cynthia and Vicki, at her side. Mr. Starr was buried in Coachella Valley Public Cemetery on 23 September 1982.
