Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Monroe County, Ohio, he served as a Corporal in Company F, 116th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Union Army. During the assault on the Confederate Fort Gregg, Petersburg, Virginia, on April 2, 1865, Corporal Thompson was one of the first to reach the main wall. Twice he was knocked from the parapet of Fort Gregg by blows from the enemy muskets but at the third attempt fought his way into the works of the fort. For bravery in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on May 12, 1865. He died at age 42 in Caldwell, Ohio.
