Son of George C Allen and Lucy Warner Allen. It was suggested that George was born in Wallingford, Vermont. Other researchers believe he was born in Chester.
During the Civil War, George served as a Private in Company M, 11th Regiment, Vermont Infantry from October 7, 1863 to June 24 1865. He transferred to Company D before mustering out August 25, 1865.
After the war, George returned to Chester, Vermont, to be a farmer.
Some transcripts of Vermont *burial* records have been incorrectly indexed to suggest George died in Chester in 1906. Although the gravestone suggests George died in1906, he passed away at his home in Chester Depot in 1905.
From the obituary published in The Chester Advisor (Chester, Vermont) on October 21, 1905: "Mr. Allen has been one of the best farmers in Chester and formerly owned the farm now occupied by Mr. Henry A. Bond. There was probably no man in town who had more friends than did Mr. Allen. He always had a kind word for everybody and was ever ready to assist the needy.
