Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in a number of Union Army units. Was a 1st Lieutenant in the 1st Missouri Volunteer Infantry, Captain and commander of the 1st Missouri Light Artillery, Major and Assistant Adjutant General on the staff of Major General John M. Schofield, and Colonel and commander of the 18th Missouri Volunteer Infantry. Brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the recent campaign in Georgia and the Carolinas". His real name was Charles Sheldon Sergeant.
