Delena Powell Smith, 71, of Pleasant Valley, passed away on Monday (Aug. 16, 2010) at her home.
She was born in Morgantown on April 24, 1939, the only child of the late Hollis H. Powell and Mildred (Currey) Powell.
Delena graduated from East Fairmont High School in 1957. She attended Fairmont State College and graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in social work. She had a 30-year career with the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, working in the child welfare division in both Charleston and Fairmont.
Delena's life was dedicated to the welfare of children and animals. She was an active member of the Marion County Humane Society and had two dogs and three cats of her own. She was a life member of the West Virginia Garden Club and a supporter of the Pricketts Fort Memorial Foundation.
In addition to her pets, she will be sadly missed by her many good and dear friends, neighbors and co-workers at the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources. Her close friends include her classmates from her East Fairmont Graduating Class of 1957: Susie Snyder, Ruth Ann Powell, Betty Michael, Patti Costello and Carol D'Amico.
Friends may call at the Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Valerie Gettings of the First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery.
