SOUTH BEND - Magdalena Lopez, 88, passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2013 in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. Magdalena was born November 5, 1924 in Scottsbluff, NE to the late Juan and Pamfila Bessara.

Magdalena married Guadalupe Lopez; he preceded her in death in 2000. Magdalena is also preceded in death by a brother, Jesus Bessara along with 12 other brothers and sisters.

Survivors include son, Tony (Le-An) Lopez of Granger; granddaughters, Jodie (Aaron) Stults of Fishers & Lindy (Jeff) Lawler of Granger; grandsons, Joshua Lopez of Osceola, Jason (Katrina) Lopez of Goshen, Blain Frick of Indianapolis, & Ty Lopez of Granger; great-granddaughters, Merritt Stults, Jaiden Lopez, & Addison Lawler; great-grandsons, Ryder Stults & Truman Stults; & cousin, Teresa Uvalles of South Bend, IN.

Magdalena retired in 1984 from the University of Notre Dame after 21 years in food service. She was a parishioner of St. Adalbert Catholic Church and Co-Founder of the Guadalupanas Society. Magdalena was honored by IUSB as Woman of the Year for her humanitarian efforts, and was honored in 2002 by the TAT organization for her work with the needy. She saw only good in everyone and never grew tired from helping those in need. Magdalena raised her cousin Teresa Uvalles from the age of 14 and treated her like a daughter.
