George Brown was one of only 20 men who stood with Rev. Lovejoy on the night of his murder. He was later elected mayor or Alton 1846-47. A political ally of Lyman Trumball, he was a delegate to the Illinois Constitutional Convention in 1847 & ran unsuccessfully for Lieutenant Governor in 1852. He established the Alton Courier in 1852. In 1861 he was appointed Sergeant-at-Arms of the United States Senate.
