Wife of Hubert L. Cather.

Gladys and Hubert were married July 6, 1931 in Wood County, Parkersburg, West Virginia.

Mother of Joanne Louise Cather Terry, Robert Lee Cather, Cary Wayne Cather, Kitty Lynn Cather, and Bonnie Mae Cather.

My mother loved her children. She loved to read. She had a vast library of books. Music was important to her and she loved to dance. I look back on that fondly now, however, as a kid with a friend visiting, I didn't want her to come dancing into the room, which she often did. It still makes me smile when I think of it.

Mom had the most beautiful flowers in her yard. Every spring, she'd take me (dragging my feet) on a tour of the yard, pointing out and identifying for me the different flowers that were beginning to come up. It still surprises me how much I remember from those tours when I have planted my own flowers. I wish I had taken more time with her, enjoying her garden with her and paying closer attention.

She taught me to play gin rummy and dominoes. I could never beat her. She could crochet beautifully and she taught me how to knit. Her oyster dressing at Thanksgiving was a family favorite although I can't say the same for her "tomato stew"! She would drink a glass of buttermilk almost every day at lunch.

When Mom was 51 years old, she finally learned how to drive. Dad bought her a brand new Monza Corvair convertible. It was yellow with a black top and she was very proud of that car. She was something else, just learned to drive with a new convertible, zipping up and down Strasburg road. She was very cool.

She was a lady through and through. She never wore jeans and very rarely would she even wear slacks and then it would have to be really cold weather. You'd see her in a skirt and blouse with heels, never flats, even when she was at home. She loved to wear costume jewelry.

She was beautiful and unique and I really miss her.

Thanks so very much to Robert for sponsoring my mother's page. He doesn't know her or our family, he just did it out of the goodness of his heart.
