Peggy was the 4th child born to Gertie Lee (Riley) (Mathis) Strickland and the only child born to Dan Mixson Strickland. Peggy's mother, Gertie Lee, died less than 2 weeks after her birth from complications of giving birth. Peggy was raised by Dan's sister, Ida Barnes.

Peggy's last husband was Lamar Burkett, he is buried in the same cemetery.
