Monty was the eldest child of Dean and June King of Kingsburg, California.
He was disabled; at the age of 6 years, he was bitten by a mosquito that carried Equine encephalitis. They didn't have the vaccine for horses back then. It caused an extremely high fever and unconsciousness, and the need for an emergency tracheotomy. After 6 months in a coma in a San Francisco hospital, he had incurred severe brain damage. He never walked or spoke and lived to the age of 30 in Porterville State Hospital.
