According to the 1850 US Federal Census, Joseph Henry Clyburn was living in the city of New Durham, La Porte County Indiana with his father Henley Chapman Clyburn and mother Eliza Clyburn. Joseph Henry Clyburn's uncle (His Dad's brother Archibald Clybourn) on his Dad's side of the family was Archibald Clybourn. Archibald Clybourn left Virginia in 1823 with 100 dollars and a horse and arrived in the present day city of Chicago on August 5, 1823. When Archibald arrived, there were 20 white inhabitants and 5,000 Black Hawk Indians.

The grandfather of Joseph Henry Clyburn, Jonas Clyburn, served in the War of 1812. During his service, Jonas Clyburn lived in Giles County, Virginia.
