August Boike was born October 14, 1868 in Lauenburg District, Pommern, Prussia. He was baptized in Evangelical Kirsch (church) in Schluschow, Lauenburg, Pommern, Prussia on 24 October, 1868. Census records record his birth as 1866, but calculations of age on same census records indicate his birth to be in 1868. Grave marker is recorded as 1867. Immigration ship manifest records list August age as 3 in April 1872, calculating backwards would make his birth year as 1868. Since confirmation records, and immigration manifest records are considered by the author as more reliable, the year 1868 is recorded as August birth date.

Census records also list August birthplace as Lombardy, which is believed to be a corruption by the census taker of Lauenburg. There was no such location as Lombardy in Germany or what was then Germany, and the family has always said they were of German descent.

Note: the family surname changed over the years, from BOIKE, to BEUKE, back to BOIKE, to BOIK, and in 1923, some of the family went back to BOIKE. All descendants of August use the BOIK spelling.
