DECATUR -- Valera Jean Braughton, 78, of Decatur died 11:45 p.m. Wednesday (April 9, 1997) in Decatur Memorial Hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Dawson & Wikoff West Wood Street Funeral Home, with visitation 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Long Point Cemetery, Niantic. Memorials: Peoples Church of God.
Mrs. Braughton was born in Illiopolis on Dec. 3, 1918, the daughter of Clarence & Julia Lockhart Koonce. She was retired from Decatur Memorial Hospital and was a member of Peoples Church of God, where she was very active. She was a volunteer in Manor Care and Friendship Manor Nursing Homes, and she led several Bible studies at the nursing homes as well as various home studies. As a volunteer she also played the piano at Manor Care. She was a member of Christian Women's Club.

Surviving are her son, Michael L. and wife Bunny of Grand Rapids, Mich.; daughter, Kathy L. Stark and husband Michael L. of Decatur; two brothers, Carroll Koonce of Illiopolis; James Koonce of Springfield.; seven grandchildren, Michael J. Braughton, Stacey Stark, Brandi Stark, Andrea Stark, Alga Vogt, Elizabeth Vogt and Matthew Vogt; one great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Julie Braughton Vogt and brother, Eldon Koonce.

Mrs. Braughton was a wonderful and loving mother, grandmother and friend. She was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew her.
