Ann Glenn Carwile Freeman, 84, went home to be with the Lord on May 26, 2013. She was born June 23, 1928 to Edna May (Glenn) and Herbert Cecil Carwile of Rome Georgia.

Ann spent her childhood years in north Rome, where her father ran the local grocery, Quarles & Son. Ann and her siblings often worked in the store along side her mother and father. She was a faithful member of the North Rome Methodist Church, where she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior. Ann sang soprano in the church choir and was frequently invited to sing at other area churches.

At 13, she set her cap on the love of her life, James Davis Freeman, also of Rome. She captured his attention by pouring a soft drink on his head when he showed up at a high school football game in the company of another girl. Their devotion endured J.D.'s WWII service as a rear gunner in the Army Air Corps. J.D. and his crew mates were shot down over China and presumed dead; they evaded capture in the jungle for 30 days until rescued. After his return and medical treatment, Ann and J.D. were married July 30, 1947 at North Rome Methodist Church. Son James Davis ("Dave") Freeman, II was born November 1, 1948 in Rome, Georgia. Daughter Lee Ann Freeman was born April 28, 1958 in Denver, Colorado.

Ann matriculated at the Georgia State College for Women then joined her new husband at the University of Georgia, where they both earned their undergraduate degrees. Ann earned a Master's Degree in 1970 from Georgia State University, while teaching full-time, caring for her household, her husband, two children, several pets, and moving due to another Air Force assignment.

Her husband was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Air Force after graduation from the University of Georgia. He and Ann set out to explore the world in their new roles. J.D.'s assignments took them to Nebraska; London, England; the Air Force Academy in Colorado; Arizona; Wiesbaden, Germany; Georgia Tech, Atlanta; Florida (pre-Disney); Ankara, Turkey; and Marietta, Georgia. When J.D. retired from the Air Force in 1975 they moved one last time and settled in Altamonte Springs, Florida. No matter where they were stationed, they made travel and exploration a top priority for the family, traveling throughout the U.S., Europe, and Turkey.

Throughout their travels, Ann served her community as an elementary school teacher. She most enjoyed teaching first graders. Students she taught in Germany in the early 1960s stayed in touch with her throughout her lifetime. Between 1969 -1972, she taught at Aloma Elementary in Winter Park. Upon her return to Florida in 1975, she began a career at Idyllwilde Elementary School in Sanford. She retired from a 37-year teaching career in 1993, but continued to volunteer in Seminole County Schools for another 20 years.

Ann was an avid reader and a frequent visitor to the Seminole County Library. In 2001, she began keeping record of the books she read; by May 2013 that list numbered 1,776 books. Ann attended computer classes at Winter Park Tech for almost 20 years. She was a passionate member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Mu State, Beta Chi Chapter, and advanced the role of professional women educators on the local, state and national levels. She was socially active and held season tickets each year for the Orlando Broadway Series and the Winter Park Playhouse. She continued to travel as often as she was able, including an Alaskan Cruise, cross-country visits to friends and family, and a week-long trip to NYC last July. One of her favorite maxims was, "No day is wasted if one learns something new."

Ann was preceded in death in 1992 by her beloved husband, James Davis Freeman; brother, Herbert C. Carwile, Jr.; sisters-in-law Ann Latimer Freeman, Ruby Davis, and Nancy Carwile; brothers-in-law Dr. Ashley ("Bud") Morgan, Camp Davis and Sidney Freeman; and niece Alice Carwile. She is survived by her loving younger sister, Julia ("Judy Babe") Morgan; son James Davis Freeman II and his wife, Betsy, Frederickburg, Virginia; daughter Lee Ann Freeman and her husband, James Ernest ("Ernie") Cole, Jr., Altamonte Springs; grandsons James Davis Freeman III (Jennifer Marie), Michael Stuart Freeman (Karen); Matthew Leo O'Brien; granddaughters Jennifer Ann Freeman, Betsy Lynn Well, Megan Well, and Amanda Cole; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and their families who hold her love in their hearts. She was especially grateful for the faithful and steadfast friendship and love of her best friend, Dixie Slater, and for Dolores Rudulph, who selflessly devoted her friendship and love in caring for Ann and her family in her last weeks. Ann left an indelible imprint on those who knew her, and she will be greatly missed.

The family will be present to receive friends Thursday, May 30 from 12:00 to 1:00 pm at Baldwin Fairchild Funeral Home, 90 Weathersfield Ave, Altamonte Springs, FL; where funeral services will also be held Thursday at 1:00 pm. She will be laid to rest immediately following services at Highland Memory Gardens. Please sign family guest registry at www.baldwinfairchild.com.
