Julia was born in Memphis on Nov 17, 1948, to parents Louis N. Beal, Jr. and Alice McCord Beal. They came to Texas in 1952, welcomed Jana Beth in 1954, and grieved her passing in 1956. Just in time for Christmas '57, Holly Helen arrived. Julia treasured her baby sister with a love still felt.

In 1962 Alice married Oliver Cavett, owner of Spring Valley Country Club where Julia modeled outfits from Lester Melnick during luncheon fashion shows.

In 1969 Lou married Betty Sue Rosamond. She and Julia developed a lifelong friendship that Betty misses deeply.

A freshman cheerleader at Richardson West Junior High, Julia was Feature Editor of the school newspaper, President of the Future Homemakers of America, and a member of the Girls' Service League and the National Junior Honor Society.

The next year she continued with the FHA and GSL, joined the Student Council, served as Secretary of the Biology Club, and was on the staff of Richardson High School's yearbook, The Eagle.

As a junior, Julia was Assistant Editor of The Eagle, a member of the National Honor Society and GSL, Secretary of the French Club, nominated for Lions' Queen, and crowned "Workshopper Queen" at Texas Tech's annual Publications Journalism Workshop.

Editor of The Eagle during her senior year, a member of the NHS, Student Council, and GSL, Julia was chosen by faculty for the Hall of Honor recognizing leadership, scholarship, and character. She received the "Meritorious Conduct and Perfect Attendance" award and was an honor graduate.

Following family tradition, Julia went to SMU, lived in the Delta Gamma sorority house, was a member of the Town Girls, served on the Fashion Committee, and was nominated for Freshman Football Queen.

Julia received a Bachelor of Arts in English and History with a Secondary Education Certificate in 1971. She married and taught freshman and senior English before her precious son Kevin arrived on Jana's birthday.

Julia earned a Master of Liberal Arts degree from SMU in 1976 and spent 10 years as a homemaker, wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, neighbor, teacher, and tireless volunteer:
* Recognized by the Medical Center of Plano for 7 years of service
* Taught adults to read and write in Operation Lift's literacy effort
* Homeowner's association VP, social chairman, and liaison to the Dallas Police Dept
* Library worker, reading teacher, and Red Cross clinic aide at Kevin's school
* GED tutor for the Dallas County Adult Probation program
* Nursing home companion
* Swimming instructor for mentally challenged children at Pearce High School in Richardson

For the next 20 years, Julia enjoyed the ethnic diversity of teaching English at the oldest high school building in the city. She married Jack Barker who was a fixture at North Dallas High School, helping Julia make her classroom feel like a living room with decorations for every holiday. She loved teaching Julius Caesar, To Kill a Mockingbird, and poetry. Students knew Mrs. Barker arrived early every day, available for help with schoolwork or just to talk. Between classes, music from the 50s and 60s emanated from her classroom. Julia was a loyal supporter of the Bulldogs until she retired from the Dallas Independent School District in 2008 with a perfect attendance record.

Kevin's 2005 marriage to Nicole Crain in Perkins Chapel at SMU was celebrated and featured in the annual D Weddings magazine. The arrival of Julia's grandchildren Madeleine and Alexander uplifted the family during several years of loss.

Meanwhile, Julia volunteered her time at the Kiddie Academy in Plano, preparing children for a life of learning.

After a brief illness, Julia died at her home in Plano on January 28, 2013. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Lori Patterson for her steadfast friendship and loving care of her Miss Julia, our Judy, Mom, and Grandmom.

Julia is reunited with her sister Jana, husband Jack, daddy Lou, parents Alice and Oliver, and Nicole's daddy Jerry. She leaves her mom and friend of 43 years Betty, her sister Holly, son Kevin, daughter-in-law Nicole, grandchildren Madeleine and Alexander, sisters Robin, Pam, Renee', Simone, and Wendy, brothers Rusty, Ken, Michael, and Archie, beloved cousins, a host of friends, and an untold number of grateful students.

Julia's teaching legacy continues at UT Southwestern, one of the top medical schools in the world, home to some of the foremost medical minds, and a leading research facility. She joined the Willed Body Program to educate the physicians of tomorrow and expand the frontiers of medical research.
