CHARLES ROGERS DEAD

After an illness of over three years of consumption,
Charles Rogers succumbed to the inevitable fate of all mankind, last eveing at 7:15, at his home here, surrounded by his family and friends, in the 56th year of his existence.

Charley Rogers was born in Trumbull county, Ohio, in 1836, and came to Portage, this county in 1859, where he engaged in business. He went back to his old home in 1862, however, and married mary Scoville, and brought her to this little hamlet where he had located. His brother, Dr G.J. Rogers, being in business in Bowling Green, desired Charley to come here, and consequently in '65 he and his family came here, and he bought the grocery business known as the Austin Stonestand, where the Rogers' Bros drug store block now stands. Here he continued in business until
68, in he old frame which is now a dwelling house on West Wooster. That year he erected the fine brick block mentioned above, in which his sons now have their drug and grocery store. Soon after the erection of this block the drug stock of the old firm of physicians, Rogers & Manville, was added to the grocery stock of Charley Rogers, and the firm was thus a three-cornered one for some years, until Dr. Rogers sold his interest and went to Kansas. We think Dr Manville and Charley rogers never finally divided their interests until about '88, when Mr Rogers' health bgecame so poor that he decided to set tie up his affairs and seek a milder climate. He went to California and was there six months, but made no permanent physical improvement. Returning home in the spring of '89, he appeared to fluctuate between better and worse for a time, but for over a year past has gradually declined with the result recorded above.

His wife and three children, George, Clayton N and Grace survive him, and sincerely mourn the loss of an always kind, indulgent and worthy husband and parent.

Talking with Dr Manville to-day he said "Charley rogers never said much, and in our business he was rather overshadowed by Doc and myself, but I can say that in all our public enterprises, county seat fight, building the little railroad and all such. Charley was just as liberal as any of us, and his money went just as free as any man's, though he never got full credit for it. He was a much better man for the town than he, through his modesty, got credit for.

Funeral services will be held at the house on Thursday at 2 o'clock, conducted bgy Rev. Browne, of the Presbyterian church, and the members of Centennial Lodge and Green Encampment, IOOF, of which latter orders he was a highly valued member.
