Wirt was the son of William Joseph and Bettie Gill Perrin. He left home at 14 and went to California where he worked as a stunt horse rider and extra in movies. Because he was not a tall man, he was used as a stunt double for women actors. He married Mary Lou Campbell on August 13, 1928. They had one child, Jack Norman Perrin. Wirt served his country in World War I as a Private in the Infantry.
