U.S. Senator, Nebraska Governor. He attended University of Omaha, (1939-41), served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, during World War II, (1942-45) and was in U.S. Army Reserve, (1945-49). After his military service, he was a branch manager of a financial corporation and was founder-president of Exon Office Supplies, (1953-71). In 1970, he was elected as a Democrat the 33rd Governor of Nebraska, serving until 1979. As Governor, he applied his business skills to the State’s economy and balanced the State's budget. After leaving office, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving (1979-97). After leaving politics, he lived in retirement until his death from cancer at age 83.
