In the 1910 Federal Census of Stillwater, Columbia County, Pennsylvania, he and Bertha appear with their three children. The household, all born in Pennsylvania, included: Perry D. Hess, age 35, married once for 16 years, a farmer; Bertha S. age 41, married once for 16 years, three children; Bessie A., age 15; Lorin R., age 8; and Lewis J., age 1.

He and Bertha appear in the 1920 Federal Census of Benton, Columbia County, Pennsylvania. The household included: Perry d. Hess, age 45, a farmer; Bertha S. , age 52; Loren, age 18; and Lewis, age 10.

He and Bertha apparently separated after that as she appears in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York in 1930, a boarder, widowed, working as a nurse, and Perry is still in Benton, farming on the farm he owns, valued at $3000, with only his son Lewis still in the household. He reported his status as married.
