WHITINSVILLE - Walter H. Sharawara, 92, of Pleasant Street, died Sunday, May 26, 2013 at St. Francis Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Worcester with family by his side. His wife of 52 years, Mary A. (Keogh) Sharawara, died September 6, 1998.
Born in Woonsocket, RI on April 4, 1921, Walter was the son of Jakym and Antonina (Latocki) Sharawara and was raised in Blackstone. The family's home was next to the Blackstone Pharmacy, where he worked from the age of 7 through his graduation from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. After returning from service in the Navy, he moved to Whitinsville in 1946 with his new bride who had seen a help wanted ad in the local newspaper: "Pharmacist wanted, house to rent." With his employment at Lynch's Drug Store in Whitinsville, he began his life-long career as a community pharmacist, a profession that he loved.
Walter owned and operated Buffum's Drugstore on Church Street in Whitinsville for 42 years before his retirement in 1991. Walter firmly believed that there was no higher calling than that of a pharmacist, or "druggist" as he liked to say. The label on every prescription dispensed at Buffum's identified it as "The Store of Personal Service," and Walter fulfilled that motto each and every day. He was a student of pharmacy and medical care throughout his life, and thoroughly enjoyed his interaction with his customers, friends who sought his advice over many years. He was an advocate for those he served; his advice to those seeking better health often went beyond the dispensing of prescriptions. Whether in the drugstore or out in the community, he genuinely enjoyed talking with folks.
Walter was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran serving as a Quartermaster in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and his duties included helping with medical needs on the yard oiler the USS Derrick. Before joining the Navy, he worked for the U.S. Food & Drug Administration as a food safety inspector assigned to the Baltimore, MD region. He was a 1938 graduate of Blackstone High School and the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, Class of 1942. After completing his pharmacy degree, he received a 2-year fellowship in Chemistry and earned his Master of Science degree. He served on the Northbridge Housing Authority and served the Whitinsville Savings Bank and Unibank as a Corporator and Trustee. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church.
Walter is survived by his children, Elizabeth Sharawara and her husband John Dieckmann of Belmont, John Sharawara and his wife Carolyn Cooper of Tucson, AZ, Paul Sharawara and his wife Laurie Lee of Tucson, AZ, Mary Ellen Stansky and her husband John Stansky of Worcester and Peter Sharawara of Whitinsville. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren: Christina, Carolyn and Kathleen Dieckmann, Anna, Jenna and Elena Stansky, and Emily, Julie and Sam Sharawara. He was the brother of the late Ann Adams, Stella Luchuk and Myron Sharawara.

His funeral will be held Saturday, June 1 from Jackman Funeral Home, 12 Spring St., Whitinsville, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church, 1 East St., Whitinsville.
