John Thomas McCabe was born in April 1857 in French Lick, Orange County, Indiana. He came to New Mexico in 1884 with his brothers John and Ves. In 1902 he married Ida Clementine Wilson, a school teacher from Texas. The couple resided in Lordsburg, New Mexico, in 1910; in El Paso, Texas, in 1920; in Middle Animas, New Mexico, in 1930; and Silver City, New Mexico, in 1940. They owned the XT Ranch near Middle Animas, Hidalgo County, Texas. John became one of New Mexico's most successful pioneer ranchers. He was a Mason. The couple reared two children Johnnie J. McCabe (Mrs. John S. Clark) and Thomas "Tom" Wilson McCabe. A third child, a daughter, died as an infant and was buried in the Shakespeare Cemetery in Hidalgo County. John died on April 22, 1941, in his son's home in Silver City, Grant County, New Mexico.
