James (Sonny) Coggins age 79 of Roanoke formerly of Georgia passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents, Boyd and Azma Coggins; two sisters, one brother and a canine companion, Ginger. Sonny retired from Norfolk Southern after 38 years of service and was a member of Green Ridge Baptist Church for many years. Sonny always had a smile for everyone and will be truly missed by all who knew him.

Surviving are his sister, several loving nieces and nephews, close friends in Roanoke and in Georgia along with his faithful canine companion, Coco. The family would like to thank the staff at Avante Nursing Home, Roanoke Memorial and Lewis Gale Hospitals for their care and support during this time.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Rescue Mission, P.O. Box 11525, Roanoke, Va 24022 or Green Ridge Baptist Church, 5521 Green Ridge Road, Roanoke, VA 24019 in his name.

A funeral service celebrating Sonny's life will be held 11:00am Friday, February 1, 2013 at Green Ridge Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Moser officiating. Interment will be held 2:00pm Sunday, February 3, 2013 in the Sweetwater Baptist Church cemetery in Douglasville, Georgia. Friends may visit with the family Thursday, January 31, 2013 from 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm at Simpson Funeral Home.
