A member of the German aristocracy. His ancestry includes close ties to the German and English nobility, namely between Hans Willem Bentinck, Earl of Portland, and Prince William III of Orange and later King William III of England. Born in Varel, Duchy of Oldenburg, Count Bentinck was the son of Count Anton II von Aldenburg and the great-grandson of Count Willem Bentinck (1704-1774) who was married to Countess Charlotte Sophie von Aldenburg.

Count Bentinck was closely associated with the "Latin Farmer" settlement in east-central Missouri but was notably harder working than his high-bred counterparts. He lived near Marthasville, Missouri where he was engaged in milling grain. His widow and daughters returned to the old country following his death. A grandson, Anton or "Anthony" lived at Marthasville and practiced medicine. The heirs of Count Bentinck carried the titles of "Count" and "Countess." Count Bentinck died in St. Louis, Missouri.
