In a letter from Mr. Gilkison's son, W. F. Gilkison, appearing in Mansfield News, November 26, 1899, the letter was posted from Indianapolis, Nov. 22, 1899, 2108 Broadway:

The son was responding to an earlier addition that contained some errors regarding John Gilkison. The son stated that John was born in Kentucky, that his father served apprenticeship in the printing and book-binding business at Lexington (assume Kentucky). He located to Chillicothe, OH and assisted in printing and binding territorial laws of Ohio.

He eventually located to Lancaster, OH and continued as a pioneer in newspaper. Here he married Sarah Coffinberry and moved to Mansfield along with Sarah's father & family. Not being sufficient patronage to support a paper, Mr. Gilkison devoted his time to building chimneys & showing government lands to prospective buyers.

He moved to Clinton, Knox, OH and printed the first paper in Knox Co.. When the Mt. Vernon paper took over the area, he moved back to Mansfield & established the Olive Branch, a small paper. This was the first paper published in Mansfield. Later he established the Mansfield Gazette & eventually established the first newspaper at Ashland, OH.

So it will be seen that John C. Gilkison was the pioneer printer in several counties.
