RALPH Roena Barton Burns, age 64, of Ralph, passed away May 27, 2013, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be 11 a.m. today at Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Smith and Rev. Alfred Banks officiating. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park.
Roena was born February 24, 1949, and spent most of her life in her hometown of Ralph. She was a graduate of Tuscaloosa County High School and later attended the University of Alabama where she received both her bachelor's and master's degrees in Education. She spent the majority of her career teaching at Faucett-Vestavia Elementary where she taught fifth grade until her retirement in 1998.
Roena loved the Lord and was a selfless and devoted wife, mother, "Gran," teacher, sister, daughter and friend. Her life was dedicated to showing and sharing her love through service to others: her family, her students, her friends, and her church family at Wesley Chapel United Methodist where she played the piano for over 35 years.
She brought joy to everyone in her life and helped to reduce the hardships and carry the burdens for those in need. Because of this her legacy will be ongoing and her presence will be greatly missed.
Her strength and determination were evident in the last years of her life as she dealt with health issues with resolve and grace.
One of her greatest joys was spending time with her youngest grandson, Robby. They spent many hours playing together, riding the golf cart around the farm, attending his ballgames, and teaching his Sunday School class.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Darden Deats Barton and Florence Walker Barton; her sister, Sue Barton Springer; and her father-in-law, Thornton Burns.
Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Robert T. Burns; her sons, Robb and Ryan; her sister, Betty Barton Carver (Tommy); her brother, D.D. Barton (Judy); her grandsons, Drew, Zach (Shelby) and Robby; her daughter-in-law, Rhonda; her great-grandson, Aiden; members of the Burns family, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
Pallbearers will be Barton Avery, David Avery, Lawrence Fair, Eddie Jacobs, Roy Jacobs, Byron McCain, Tommy McCain and Glenn Walker.
Honorary pallbearers are members of Wesley Chapel Church, the Happy Seniors Group, the past and present faculty, staff and administrators of Faucett-Vestavia Elementary School, the Friday Night Pickin' Group and her friends, family and neighbors of the Ralph community.
Her family extends its deepest gratitude to the doctors and staff of the MICU at DCH Regional Medical Center for their excellent care and the many friends and family who have provided comfort with visits, calls, prayers and assistance at this difficult time; especially her mother-in-law, Virginia Burns, and her sisters-in-law, Karen Burns Hawkins and Deborah Burns Jarman.
