John O'Donnell, Jr. was born in Amesbury, Essex, Massachusetts in 1867. His parents were John O'Donnell and Catherine "Kate" McGroty O'Donnell. John Sr. was born in Ireland in 1842 and emigrated in 1846. Kate was born in Bangor, Maine in 1837. Her parents were born in Ireland.

John welcomed a sister, Mary Ellen, in 1869. The family moved to Maine where a sister, Catherine, was born in 1872, a brother, Joseph, was born in 1875, and another sister, Susan, was born in 1877. The O'Donnell family moved to Minneapolis for a time before taking residence on a farm in Stanfold, Wisconsin in 1882.

John and his brother and sisters attended the first local school in the Rice Lake area. He helped by working on the O'Donnell family dairy farm. His father, John, obtained the land after serving in the Union Navy during the Civil War.

John married Eliza Mae Spores on December 12, 1897. They had one son, Lloyd Mike, who was born in 1898 in Barron. The couple divorced in October of 1899. Little is known of John's later life and death in Wisconsin.
