Pvt. Ottesen survived the torpedoing & sinking of the troopship "Tuscania" on 5 February 1918 in the North Channel between Scotland & Ireland by German submarine UB-77.

He returned from World War I aboard the "St. Louis" in February 1919 as a corporal in Co. F, 161st Infantry, 41st Division.

While on "Tuscania," he listed his father, Crest Otteson [sic] of Nevis, Minnesota, as his next-of-kin.

Theodore graduated from the University of Oklahoma School of Law in 1919.
