He was the son of John and Rebecca (Sheeley) Hurst. As was the custom of the time he did not have a middle name but was dubbed John "Mill Creek" because of where he lived.

He grew to adulthood in Virginia and married there, 1757, to Nancy Nunn. Nine children were born to this marriage.

In 1774 he joined the Virginia Militia and was stationed at Fort Pitt. This was the headquarters for troops and supplies during the Revolutionary War.

After the war John moved to Russell County and it was here, in 1789, that his wife died. Later that same year he married Elizabeth Breedwell. Eight children were born to this marriage.

In 1803 John was on the move again. This time settling in the Elks Bend area of the Powell River in Claiborne County, Tennessee.

When he was in his 83rd. year he was killed, when a tree fell on him. It is said he was buried in the Elks Bend Cemetery near by. I have not been able to find the exact location of the cemetery.
