Jeff Mitchell, 90, of Ursa, longtime Ursa postmaster, died at 6:16 p.m. Friday (May 11, 1990) in Blessing Hospital.
Mr. Mitchell was born April 11, 1900, on a farm near Loraine, a son of John and Ettie Karnes Mitchell. He married Charlotte Ora Eshom March 12, 1927, in Quincy. She died Aug. 22, 1979.
Mr. Mitchell had formerly been a rodman for the highway engineers and had operated a meat market in Mendon. He was an investigator with the State's Attorney's office and an assistant cashier with the Farmers Bank of Ursa. From 1933 to 1970, he was postmaster of the Ursa Post Office. He also was a member of the Ursa Lions Club.
Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Vera Eshom of Valmeyer and Mrs. Naomi Austin of Mendon; a brother-in-law, George Mund of Quincy; three nephews; and four nieces.
Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by a brother, Roy "Slim" Mitchell and a sister, Ettie May Mitchell.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the Curry-Hunter Funeral Home in Mendon by the Rev. Tim and the Rev. Jan Darmour-Paul. Burial will be in Providence Cemetery in Ursa.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday with the family meeting friends from 6 to 8.
