George H. Stagg, 90 years old, passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Niagara Hospice House in Lockport. He was born in Niagara Falls on March 7, 1923, the son of the late Edward Stagg and Edith (Carter) Stagg Sermak.
George attended South Junior High School and was a graduate of the former Trott Vocational High School. On April 16, 1943, he entered the United States Navy serving until his honorable discharge on November 18, 1945, with the rank of Sonarman Second Class. He served aboard the USS Henderson and was awarded the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal with 2 Stars, the World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
George worked as a lab technician for over 30 years at E.I. DuPont DeNemours & Co., retiring in 1986. He was an avid pool player who earned the title of City Billiard Champion under the name of "George Smith". He was a devoted family man who enjoyed bowling and card playing.
George is survived by his sons, John Stagg of Niagara Falls and Daniel (Floriza) Stagg of Oklahoma City, OK; and his daughters, Catherine Grannis of Lewiston, Margaret (John) Placek of Cambria, and Jane (Paul) Torrey of the Town of Niagara. He is survived by six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his two sisters, Edith Roeder of Melbourne, FL and Ruth Johnson of Wayne, NJ; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy (Jankowski) Stagg, who passed away on March 23, 2011; his son, Charles Stagg; brothers, Edward, Lawrence, Earl and William Stagg; and sisters, Betty DeMers and Virginia Cosentino.
