Julia was born in Arcadia, Trempealeau, Wisconsin. Her mother, Julia A. (Kenyon) Penny, died giving birth to her. A letter to that effect was located in County Recorders Office in Whitehall, Trempealeau, Wisconsin.

A newspaper account in Galesville Independent, page 8, October 28, 1886, noted: "Mrs. Kenyon and her granddaughter, Miss Julia Penny, are visiting Iowa." Julia would have been 14-years-old at the time.

Julia married Ai P. Hagerman on 6 Feb 1892, Wisconsin, USA (Wisconsin, U.S., Marriage Records, 1820-2004)

She and her husband moved to Winona, Minnesota. It was told that Julia did not like the cold climate and wanted to move someplace that was warmer.

By 1910, they were living in Boulder Creek, California, where other family members lived. Later they moved to San Luis Obispo County, California, where they remained. (It's warmer there!)
