Son of L. Clair and Betty (Thompson) Barber. Graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1968. He attended Central Nebraska Technical College; enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at the Naval War College at Providence, R.I. In 1978, he moved to Lincoln and was employed at Centel working with computers and in 1993, moved to Kansas City continuing in the same line of work until retiring in 2007. He was interested in running, competing in marathons in Lincoln and the New York Marathon in 1990. He married Ada Valdez.
