Charles Riegel Bartholomew, 82, of Burlington died at 1:50 a.m. Sunday, March 21, 2010, at Great River Medical Center.

Born July 12, 1927 in Palmerton, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Harry and Ruth Riegel Bartholomew. He married Rhea Dougherty Boyd. She preceded him in death on August 17, 1981. He married Frances (Knotts) Stafford on July 24, 1982.

Charlie was a World War II Merchant Marine veteran. He later served in the Army Transportation Corps and the Army Air Corps which became the Air Force serving at the rank of sergeant.

He worked in maintenance, retiring in 1989. Charlie was a member of AmVets Post #29, American Legion Post #52 and was a past allstate commander for VFW.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Bartholomew of Burlington; one son, Bruce (Suzie) Bartholomew of Lebanon, Illinois; one daughter, Jodi (Jeff) Dennison of Burlington; two grandsons, Tucker and Darrian; one granddaughter, Kayla; one great grandchild, Ka'Darion; two brothers, Harry (Mary Jo) Bartholomew and James (Terry) Bartholomew and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two grandchildren, Tailor and Hunter.

Friends may call after 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 24th in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 24th, in Lunning Chapel.

The memorial funeral service for Charlie will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 24th, in Lunning Chapel with the Rev. Randall Gearhart officiating. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites. Inurnment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for VFW Post #10102 or AmVets Post #29.
