Viola Frieda Wenzel Krueger died March 12, 2008 at Dove Hill Care Center. Funeral services were held March 15 at St. John Lutheran Church with Pastor Russell Nebhut officiating. Burial followed at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Aleman.
She was born on Dec. 27, 1919, the daughter of Otto and Sophie (Feldman) Wenzel of Aleman, Texas.
The Wenzels were members of St. Paul Lutheran Church and when Viola was only two days old, on Dec. 29, her parents took her to be baptized by Pastor Moerbe.
The Wenzel family farm was about three miles from the church and Viola would reminisce about the days of walking to school three miles each way. When school was over for the day and she and her siblings arrived home, there were chores to do before the sun set.
Mrs. Krueger learned at a young age how to pick cotton. The entire family worked hard just to make a living.
On April 9, 1933, when Viola was 13 years old, she stood before the altar of the Lord at St. Paul Lutheran and confessed her faith, the faith into which she had been baptized. Pastor Moerbe had instructed her through her years of confirmation and when she confessed her faith, he gave to her Psalm 37:5 as her confirmation verse; "Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act."
Mrs. Krueger was just a few days away from her twenty-first birthday when she married Raymond Krueger. The two had known each other all their lives. They were united in marriage on Dec. 16, 1940, at St. Paul by Pastor A. C. Liefer. The couple raised their family in much the same way they had been raised by their parents. They worked the land and trusted God to provide the harvest. They were active in church, teaching their sons the importance of faith and the assurance we have as God's children. Her husband preceded her in death about 15 years ago.
Mrs. Krueger made the decision to move to the Dove Hill Care Center where she took up residence in the assisted living portion of the home. She grew to enjoy living at Dove Hill. She took part in the many activities provided and spent time visiting with her friends.
A few weeks ago she a suffered a stroke and was left unable to use one arm and leg and she could not speak. Even though she could not speak, she was able to communicate. When people came to visit, her eyes would light up and she would hold out her hand to welcome them. She understood what was happening and she accepted her limitations with grace and dignity.
Mrs. Krueger was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Sophia Wenzel; her husband of almost fifty-three years, Raymond Krueger, Sr.; all of her brothers and sisters: Ben Wenzel, Monroe Wenzel, Bill Wenzel, Henry Wenzel, Hattie Schmidt, and Nelda Streger.
Survivors include her two sons, Raymond Krueger, Jr. and wife, Patsy, of Hamilton; Victor Krueger and wife, Gleda, of West Columbia; grandchildren, Gary Krueger and wife, Nancy and Glynn Krueger and wife, Karen, all of Hamilton; Bryce Krueger of West Columbia and Alaina Krueger of Houston; two step-grandchildren, Travis Meissner and wife Kim; and Brenda Armstrong and husband, Mike; four great-grandchildren, Brittany Krueger, Jeremiah Vogel, McKenzie Krueger, and Abrianna Vogel; eight step great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were: Charlie Bottlinger, Bryce Krueger, Glynn Krueger, David Melde, Cecil Wenzel, LeRoy Wenzel. Honorary Pallbearers were Gary Krueger, Leonard Wenzel, H.C. Wenzel.
