DOE HILL, DEATH OF PROMINENT CITIZEN:
John Milton Jones, the subject of this sketch was born at the old Jones home on the headwaters of the Cowpasture river (South of Palo Alto) March 16, 1857 and died January 26, 1917. He was the son of the late Henry C. Jones and Victoria (Armstrong) Jones and is survived by three brothers and three sisters, namely Dr T.M. Jones of Ashland, Va., Dr. Marshall Jones, Bryson Jones, and Mrs. J.K. Gilbert of Churchville, Mrs. John J. Hiner, of Staunton, and Mrs. Richard Ralston, of Lexington, ILL. all of whom were present at the funeral except Mrs. Gilbert and Mrs. Ralston. He was a prosperous farmer, stockman and merchant at this place for a number of years. The deceased had been in failing health for a year or more, but his death came as a shock to his friends and he was in the store attending to business two days prior to his death. He had been a member of the Methodist church for a number of years, and was very liberal in its support. He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Lydia Hiner of this place and mother of his three children, Henry, Thomas and Paul. His second wife was Miss Clara McCarty of Roanoke, who survives him. Funeral services were held in the home, by his pastor, Rev. Wendell Allen, assisted by Rev. Josiah Beverage. The floral offerings were beautiful; a large cross of carnations, roses and sweet peas was given by the Masonic Lodge of Monterey, of which he was a member, a large wreath of carnations and sweet peas, the gift of The First National Bank of Monterey and a number of smaller pieces by friends and relatives.
Parents Henry & Victoria Jones. P. 238 Vital Records of Highland. Operated the J.M. Jones general store in Doe Hill.

Editor's Column February 2, 1917
By the death of this prominent man, notice of which, along with a sketch of his life, will be found in our letter from Doe Hill, Highland county has suffered a real loss. The passing away of such men is felt not only by the community in which they lived, but a larger unit county and State is made poorer by the loss of a citizen whose life and conduct measures up to the standard of all-round manhood. In saying that J. M. Jones was such a man as this, we voice a sentiment that is almost unanimous. He was known as a man of big heart and broad, generous mind; one whose friendships were strong and enduring, and the attachments formed in life, growing out of personal contact with men in business and social relations will live long after he is gone. His thoughtfulness and generosity embraced the humble and poor in its broad reach, and to be enshrined in the hearts of this class is a life-commentary of which the Master has given his approval. In his death many feel that they have lost a personal friend, the county a useful, worthy citizen.
