Samuel H. Brookhart, R. R. #3 (3262 Clark Lane), Sumner, Illinois, died Friday, May 24, 2013, at the Lawrence Community Healthcare Center. Samuel was born May 2, 1914, the son of William Lee and Carrie Alice (Legg) Brookhart, Lawrence County, Illinois. He married Martha Cunningham on December 25, 1939, and she preceded him in death on March 19, 2013. He graduated from Sumner High School and Eastern Illinois University with a Bachelor's degree, playing both football and basketball as a student there.

Samuel was a teacher, combat soldier, farmer, religious, civic and political leader. He taught for 44 years in Lawrence County schools, was Principal of Petrolia and Petty schools for many of those years, and coached many winning basketball teams. He was a World War II Army Veteran, commissioned to the rank of First Lieutenant while serving in France and Germany. Samuel and Martha were members of the Sumner Congregational Christian Church, where he was a Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent. Samuel was active in the Republican Party and served as County Chairman for many years.

We are thankful for his life and the positive influence he had on countless others. Funeral services will be at 1 pm Sunday, June 2, 2013 at the Sumner Congregational Christian Church in Sumner, IL. Visitation will be Saturday, June 1, 2013 from 6 pm to 8 pm at the Sivert-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Sumner, IL. Burial will be in the Sumner City Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the VFW and American Legion.
