GLOUSTER, OHIO
John Elbert Standley, 90 of Glouster passed away Saturday January 1, 2011 at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus. Born October 14, 1920 in Hemlock, he was the son of the late john E. and Edna M. Losey Standley. He was a World War II veteran where he served in the Navy aboard the USS Hermitage and the USS Gleaves. He retired from the Peabody Coal Company, and was a 48 year member of the United Mine Workers, a member of the Bishopville Church of Christ, the Glouster Masonic Lodge #607 F&AM, the Jacksonville V.F.W. Post 9866 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, John Ronald and Theresa Thompson Standley of Glouster; several nieces and nephews, his extended family, Ann, Carl, Chuck, Lura, Tim, Megan, Chris and Riley Thompson; and all his friends at Bonnie's Restaurant in Glouster.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Muriel Helen Schreck Standley; two brothers, Merle "Steudy" Standley, and Donald Standley; four sisters, Thelma Grimes, Geneva Morgan, Minnie Mae Roth and Marjorie Rice; and an infant sister, Burnice Fay Standley.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday January 5, 2011 at the Morrison Funeral Chapel, Glouster-Bishopville with John Wright officiating. Interment will be in the Glouster Cemetery where there will be a military graveside service conducted by the United States Navy Color Guard.
