Pastor John Charles Spradlin, Sr. 64, of Arkansas City, died Thursday (May 23, 2013) at his residence. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 am Tuesday (May 28, 2013) at the First Southern Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The Reverend Tom Edwards will officiate.
John was born at Bolling AFB in Washington, D.C. on August 20, 1948, to James J. and Margaret (Brennan) Spradlin. John was raised on many Air Force Bases up and down the Eastern Seaboard. After his father's retirement the graduated from Wheaton High School, Wheaton, Maryland. He attended college at Tennessee Temple of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and graduated from Faith Baptist Bible College and Seminary of Ankeny, Iowa. He later received teaching credentials from Pittsburg State University. He married Kathy Carter on November 20, 1969, in Winterset, Iowa. The couple has made their home in Iowa, Ohio, Minnesota and Kansas, where John has served as minister for the Baptist Church. John was currently serving as Pastor of the First Southern Baptist Church of Arkansas City.
Survivors include his wife Kathy of the home; two sons John, Jr and his wife Merav Spradlin of Ladera Ranch, California, Aaron Spradlin of Arkansas City; brothers Jim Spradlin of Germantown, Maryland, Patrick Spradlin of Xenia, Ohio; a sister Janice Greenwood of Fairborn, Ohio; a half-brother Joe Strausberger of Gaithersburg, Maryland; and three grandsons, Ethan Uzi, Jude Zevi, and Stayden Glenn Spradlin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a half-brother and three half-sisters.
A memorial has been established with the First Southern Baptist Church of Arkansas City. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
