Juana Higuera was born in 1825 in Santa Clara County, near the old Mission Santa Clara. Hers was one of the original Spanish families that settled in California when under Spanish rule. They owned thousands of acres of fertile farm land in the valley. In those days there were few settlers where Oakland now lies and the great route of travel was from Santa Clara Mission to Mission San Jose, at the mouth of the Niles Canyon, and then thru the Livermore valley into the San Joaquin. In 1850 she married Augustine Bernal. He owned the great Rancho el Valle de San Jose, consisting of nearly all of the Livermore valley. They came to live were Pleasanton now stands. They had a total of nine children. The 3 children alive at the time of her death were Augustine U. Bernal, Jose Reyes Bernal and Antone H. Bernal. After the death of her first husband, she married Joseph Nevis in 1875.
