Losing their lives in the crash on Highway 10, a mile and a half south of Motley were Harry I. Sundeen, 49, of 5908 York Ave. So., Minneapolis, assistant manager of the Minnesota Newspaper Association; his wife, Beatrice, 38; and their sons, Jay 7; and Kyle, 3.
The bodies of Harry Sundeen and his two sons were found in the wreckage while Sundeen’s wife, Beatrice, 38, died about three hours later in a hospital at Staples, Minn.
Highway patrolmen said an empty car transport truck, southbound on highway 10, struck a Minneapolis car in front of it, then collided head-on with the northbound Sundeen car.
The first car hit by the truck was hurled into a ditch. It’s driver, Mrs. Orpha M. LaCroix, of Minneapolis, escaped injury, patrolmen said.
The truck drive, Robert G. Cofell, 21, Chatham, Canada was hospitalized in a serious condition with a possible skull fracture and multiple injuries.
Doctors said Cofell was dazed and unable to tell what happened just before the 11:55 a. m. accident.
His truck was owned by Dominon Auto Carriers, Ltd., Toronto, Canada.
Funeral services for the Sundeen family will be held at the Sebeka High School Auditorium on Wednesday, April 27, at 2:00 p. m. Interment will be in the Lakewood cemetery.
Mr. and Mrs. Sundeen and sons were headed for Sebeka to attend the funeral services of Mrs. Sundeen’s aunt, Mrs. Fred R. Miller, which was held Saturday at 1:30 p. m. in the Sebeka Methodist Church.
Mrs. Sundeen was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lou Miller of Sebeka. The Millers had not yet left the church in Sebeka following the funeral services of Mrs. Fred R. Miller when they learned of the tragic and shocking accident which took the lives of their daughter, son-in-law and two grandsons.
Sundeen became assistant manager of MNA in 1954 after selling his weekly newspaper, The Menahga (Minn.) Messenger. He formerly worked as a newspaperman in International Falls, Redwood Falls and Little Falls, Minn.
