Alfred Birch Huested's father died when he was young. Before 1850, his mother Mahala Birch Huested moved her family to Amsterdam, NY. By 1852, they settled in the city of Albany.
Alfred received an excellent education at Albany Academy. While working at Dexter and Nellegar, a drugstore, where he developed a keen interest in chemistry. He then became a student of medicine under Dr. James H. Armsby where he met Dr. James Emmett Pomfret.
At the start of the Civil War, Alfred Birch Huested joined Dr. Pomfret in the 113th NY Infantry Regt (aka 7th NY Heavy Art)serving as Hospital Steward. Assigned to guard Washington, DC the unit saw little action so Alfred was returned to Albany where he received his medical license. Upon Alfred's return, he was promoted to Asst Surgeon. On March 31, 1864, he transferred to the 2nd NY Cavalry as Asst Surgeon and later was promoted to Surgeon. Upon the end of the War, the regiment was assigned to guarding the overland stage route and he served until June 25, 1866 when he mustered out in Denver.
Returning to Albany, he joined a medical practice with Dr. Pomfret. He then established a drug business, A. B. Huested and Company which he operated until 1909. In addition he taught at Albany Medical College & the Albany College of Pharmacy where he was a Trustee.
He married Margaret A. Pomfret daughter of his mentor.
