Mrs. Mary Gordon Hendy, last of one of the most prominent and influential families in Central Missouri, died at her home 429 East Capitol Avenue, shortly after 8 o'clock this morning of infirmities.

Mrs. Hendy, nee Mary Houston McMillen, had been a resident of this community for nearly three quarters of a century. She was born in Cynthiana, Ky., July 4, 1843 and came to Missouri with her parents when a young girl. They settled in what had become known as the Gordon neighborhood in Cole County. She made several visits to her native state and except for these she lived almost continually in Cole County.

Her father was Captain Samuel McMillen who served his country with distinction during the Mexican War. Her mother was a sister of General Sam Houston, president of Texas before it became part of the union and an industrious figure in the history of the west.

Mrs. Hendy first married John W. Gordon, prominent Cole County contractor who was intimately identified with the early history and progress of Cole County. Seven years after the death of Mr. Gordon, she married the Rev. J.F. Hendy, pastor of the Presbyterian Church for many years and later President of Lindenwood College. Rev. Hendy died in 1918.

Nephews and nieces, Rev. W.F. McMillen of Minneapolis, George Ramsey of Nevada, Mo., Miss Henrietta McMillen of this city and Miss Emma Ramsey of Nevada are the only living near relatives.

Mrs. Hendy was a woman of strong character, the personification of poise and grace. She was known for her splendid hospitality and for her many philanthropies.

She was active in Church and charity work for many years. No reasonable appeal to her ever went unanswered. She interested herself actively in the welfare of the community which had been her home so many years to the very close of useful and exemplary life.

Mrs. Hendy was a member of the U.D.C. and D.A.R.

Her death is a matter of keen regret to all who had the good fortune of her friendship and acquaintance.

Definite funeral arrangements await word from her nephew in Minneapolis. Services will probably be conducted at the home Thursday afternoon, the Rev. A.B. Jackson of the Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
