He enlisted 28 Oct 1860 in the 1st Vermont Cavalry, Company D, as a private. They fought in Battle of McDowell April 16, 1862 in the Shenandoah Valley. Durlam was taken prisoner July 18, 1862 and held at Belle Isle, a camp located in the middle of the James River opposite Richmond. Prisoners there lived in tents, exposed to the elements and subject to epidemic disease.
